We break our phones. You can say we are careful but it's true, we aren't that careful. So much so that there are studies conducted by numerous organizations every year to determine just how prone we are to break our most important means of communication.
Are We Really That Clumsy?
One of those recent studies , conducted by Secure Data Recovery, says about 76% of us break our phones at some point.
76%, let that sink in for a minute. That means 3 out of 4 people will break their phone. For those of us who grew up with phones that retailed for $99.99 (wow, I'm dating myself here) that price tag was inconvenient but wasn't too bad. Now, in 2024 when phones can easily cost over $1,000 to replace, a drop can be very costly.
What Are the Most Common Phone Mishaps?
Ok, we now know that we are prone to breaking our phones, but what about how we break it? According to a survey conducted by AT&T the most common way we break our phones is, you guessed it, dropping them.
AT&T surveyed slightly under 3,300 participants, 3286 to be exact, and shows the many ways we break our phones:
- 25% - Dropping it while taking it out of a pocket or purse
- 20% - Slipped out of the hand while talking or texting
- 16% - Forgot the phone was in your lap when standing up
- 10% - Dropping something on it
- 9% - Dropping it while taking a picture
- 8% - Dropping it in the toilet
- 7% - A child broke it
- 6% - Forgot to take it out of a pocket when swimming
- 6% - Threw it in a fit of rage (we're not proud of it but it happens)
- 5% - Broke it while having a little too much fun at the bar
- 5% - Dropping it in the bathtub
- 3% - A pet mistook it for a toy
Did this happen to you with your phone? Don't replace it, fix it with Batteries Plus!
Why Is It Better To Repair Your Phone?
Besides the obvious (the cost), phones are expensive now, remember? Are there any other benefits of fixing your phone versus replacing it? Yes.
- Data protection - With services like Apple iCloud and Samsung Cloud, backing up some devices is fairly simple so you can download your data to your new phone. This process can be different depending on the manufacturer and model of the phone and can still give you anxiety. What about the data on the old phone? Can I double-check everything before I turn it in? Does the data on the old phone get deleted before I leave the store? All valid questions that you should ask your sales representative when you are buying a new phone. When you fix your current phone, you eliminate those anxious moments by leaving your data as is, it's still where you left it.
- It's better for the environment - Repairing your phone helps reduce electronic waste and pollution, while making new phones requires a lot of materials, electricity, and fossil fuels.
- It can sometimes be faster than setting up a new phone - As we've all experienced over the years getting a new phone isn't the fastest purchase. You could easily spend a couple of hours at the store, especially if you are there when it's busy. Most phone repairs take an hour or less and you can go about your day while it's being repaired.
- You don't have to learn how to use a new device - This is a big part of the decision for many people. When you've been using the same device for a long time and spent all that time learning how to use it to its full potential, you don't want to start all over with a new phone.
